Speaking at length yesterday with one of the folk running the local food bank charity I was appalled to learn of the UK governments Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) attitude to folk in crisis. The charity worker was explaining the voucher system to me. On the vouchers are numerous check boxes as to what the crisis is and how it came to be. Apparently over 70% of hunger crisis is caused by delays by the DWP in sorting out claims. The DWPs response? A spot of political bullying to take that particular check box from off the voucher because... it makes them look bad. Thankfully the charity did not and will not respond to such pressure and told them where to go, leaving the check box in-situ. Heres a thought, and forgive me if this seems like common sense and the right thing to do, but hows about the DWP acts to sort out the problem rather than using pressure tactics to cook the books? Seems simple enough to me. Shame on the DWP.
