Speaking of homophones, a common error is to switch INCIDENTS and INCIDENCE. Incidents (Latin, “to happen to”) are events, as in “we found fifteen incidents of poor spelling in a single text message.” Incident can also be an adjective (attached to or falling on) used in legalese. An incidence (same root source, alas!) is the frequency with which something occurs, as in “one finds increased incidence of poor spelling due to the prevalence of texting.” To refer to “incidences” is like saying that your dog has been “spayeded.” You don’t want to be that person who spells it incorrectly, so think incident/event and incidence/frequency.
