Special Hajj passport desk established for Kenyan pilgrims BY FAMIDAH WAMBUI A special desk to expedite the issuance of passports for Kenyan Muslim pilgrims planning to go for Hajj has been established at immigration department headquarters in Nairobi. The Director of Immigration Services Jane Waikendi said the desk, which will also handle other urgent travel needs such as medical emergencies, will facilitate passport applications for Kenya’s Muslim faithful willing to visit Makka to perform Hajj (pilgrimage). She said: “This will ensure that there are no delays which may leave out travelers on religious pursuit and will also encourage other applications not to compromise officer due to the urgency of the applications.” The director also noted that the time spent in processing passports has been reduced from previous 10 days to 5 days as part of rapid response initiative by the government of Kenya in respect to Kenya’s Muslims right for religious practices. Muslim leaders in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government have been pushing for the interest of Muslims and are among those who facilitated the process. Speaking exclusively to The New Dawn, the chairman of Kenya Hajj Trust Sharif Hussein Omar welcomed the move and termed it as very positive towards the interest of Muslim community. “This is very positive and welcoming idea; it will enable Muslims in this country to perform hajj easily unlike before when they were losing a lot of time in chasing travel documents,” he said.
