Special statement from the National Weather Service issued at 11:52 a.m.: Period of steadier snow expected late this afternoon into evening... Rain and snow showers will increase in coverage through the afternoon. A more focused band of snow is expected to develop late this afternoon and persist into the early evening hours. This band may produce fairly intense snowfall for a short time with visibility potentially falling to around a mile or so. The main areas expected to be affected are along and south of a line from Chicago to Mendota with the bulk of the snow falling during the evening commute across the Chicago area. Accumulations around an inch will be possible... mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces but some slushy accumulation may occur on roadways. Be prepared for longer commute times and the potential for slushy roads.
