Specifically, among major groups, the Labor Department reported that the unemployment rate in April for teenagers, blacks and Hispanics, respectively, was 24.1 percent, 13.2 percent, and 9.0 percent. Also in April, “the number of involuntary part-time workers increased by 278,000 to 7.9 million,” reported the Labor Department, while “2.3 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force.” These “marginally attached” workers “were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months” reported the Labor Department, but they “were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the four weeks preceding the survey.” Sounding not unlike Kerry in Jordan, candidate Obama delivered a “transformative” declaration at a campaign rally on Oct. 30, 2008: “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” Since then, the national debt has grown by a record $6.2 trillion and the Census Bureau reports that 50 million Americans — one in six — are now living in poverty.
