Speech given by Mr. Meredith Charles, Retired Acting Commissioner of Police and Senior Manager of AOSS at the last graduation of Security Officers in July 2013. It was not just addressed to the officer graduating but to the general public as well..... Ever since the devastating terrorist attacks of 9/11, the USA and many countries, including St Kitts and Nevis have been more concerned about security. The question; are our public spaces safe? Every community, including the business community has reason to consider professional security offers. If you own a business, you are certainly aware of the negative monetary impact and damages that can result from criminal activity. If you own a home and have children, the safety of your love ones and possessions are of utmost importance. If you are considering additional security for your business, home or community, trained security officers, inevitably is your best option. Alpha and Omega Security Solution, (AOSS); can, and will provide you with properly trained security officers as demonstrated here today, to combat any threat, of criminal activity. I want to state that our commitment to creating the safest possible environment for our clients has earned us a reputation of excellence and long term client relationships. Our clients know they can depend on us to be assertive, positive and highly professional. AOSS provides security services throughout St Kitts and Nevis for various banking institutions and private premises. When it comes to protecting bankers and employers and guarding against theft, robbery and burglary, AOSS security officers are at the top of their class; because of the professional security training they receive, prior to the commencement or deployment at the work site. This brings me to the Course Overview and some of the various disciplines that they are subjected to. 1. Mental awareness 2. Body Guard and introduction to close protection operations 3. Report writing 4. Types of searches and how to conduct them 5. Scanning and searching persons 6. Presentation on how to budget your money 7. Evidence and Crime Scene Protection. Now that you have been trained and certified a Private Security Officer, I would admonish you to work closely with the Police for the good of society. The police need your assistance and I have no doubt whatsoever that your helping hand would be greatly appreciated, not only by the police but the country at large in bringing criminals to justice. Throughout history, mankind is known to be one of the most vicious brutal and violent beings ever existed. Even though modern civilization together with statutory provisions have enacted laws to curb violent behavior, man continue to inflict severe acts of violence on society with increasing frequency. Undoubtedly some person’s objective is to achieve profitable gains, sometimes for the pleasure of revenge. In some instances, these acts of violence have been influenced and perpetrated as a result of the complexity of the Criminal Justice System. Legal technicalities and the apparent failure of the penal treatment of offenders, as well as delays in proceedings sometimes make criminals feel, they can commit more crime without feeling the full effects of the Law. There is a school of thought that when a Court arrive at a decision to dismiss a case against an offender and return them to the community, have seriously affected the work of the Police. This is also reflected in a book Environment and Organization by Albert J Reiss Jr and David J Bourda. This is really true, and is also true to say that these decisions have also provoked feelings of anger, uneasiness and insecurity. For very often those released offenders frequently perpetuate more acts of violence on the society, thus creating more problems for the police and increased dissatisfaction and fear in the citizenry. It is evident that citizens’ dissatisfaction with the administration of justice often resulted in them taking the Law into their hands. This phenomenon in some instances has prompted some citizens into vigilante groups with a strong tendency to settle matters outside the courts, with serious consequences to make sure that justice is done. The effects of having the citizens take the law in their own hands to subvert or to dispense justice with or without violence is dangerous and counter productive to the well-being of the society. Hence, matters of this nature cannot be encouraged or ignored but demands prompt meaningful and decisive remedial action to reduce perversion of due course of justice. It is not enough to be efficient and effective in discharging our duties. All of us who are engaged in Law Enforcement dispensing of justice, must endeavor to act in a way which deserves of the support of the public by reason of the manner in which we treat them. Professionalism fairness and integrity must guide all our activities. We must act with due regard for the rights of all the people we serve, rich and poor alike. Without this approach, all our efforts to enlist confidence will fail. Ultimately in these days of increased crime and violence impacting negatively on our society, it is incumbent on all of us to come together and ensure that law and order, fairness and justice are maintained in all the corridors of our society. To achieve this, the cooperation and support of all is of paramount importance.
