Speed skills for softball I am consistently trying to learn as much as possible from other trainers to sharpen my skills…some info is amazing and some is just plan ridiculous. Most of the speed information I do research is not geared towards softball players, hence why I always mention that speed skills must be applicable to your sport. Softball players need very specialized skills to enhance their speed on the field and on the bases. Some drills that coaches, trainer’s use for softball teams is just old, too general and well horrible!!! Softball Players NEED; -quick acceleration -the ability to use their hips to rotate and drive -cutting skills, defensive skills are all about angles -DRIVE I’ll start with just these four. Every player needs to learn to accelerate and accelerate quickly. That means your FIRST step is hard and fast; not you’re second or third, your FIRST step. How many games are won or lost by one run, one missed play, or a ball that cut have been knocked down..seconds that matter. Our hips are so powerful and so underused. Any time you limit the use of your hips in running you limit your power. Powerful hips create a powerful stride and drive. Proper fielding mechanics are huge to your defensive game. Let’s also remember that the only predictable thing about softball is its unpredictability. Player’s should consistently train speed skills in unusual positions to create drive and angles on the field. If you teach a player how to react to certain positions they will naturally react to those conditions defensively. All of these skills have multifaceted components to them. They are vital in creating strong, powerful, fast players and even more important as a unit. When we develop these skills we need to create a drive in speed work that is basically a powerful drive through your hips to accelerate. That movement needs to be taught to be deliberate and hard... These are just some of the skills taught in The Diamonds Speed and Agility Class, every Wed at 6pm
