Spent part of the afternoon watching David Tennant in the episode - TopicsExpress

Spent part of the afternoon watching David Tennant in the episode Midnight which is right up there with Blink. It caused me to realize that Tennant is probably the Doctor I like most -- nothing against Capaldi or Smith or Baker, theyre all terrific too. But Tennant played the Doctor as if he was very much in touch with all that knowledge and history piled up in his head. Smith played the Doctor as if he was discovering it all for the first time and making it up/figuring it out as he went. That was okay too, he was reinventing the Doctor as a young man. Capaldis character has gelled, but theres still a disconnected quality -- does he care about us pudding-brains or not? Hes dismissive -- okay, thats fair too, sometimes its really hard to like human beings, but sometimes Capaldi seems at a loss where David Tennant or Matt Smith would have already had the wheels turning at high speed. I like Capaldi a lot, but Im not yet comfortable with this schizophrenic rattling around of attitude. Im not sure who he is from week to week. And while Clara has accepted this new regeneration of the Doctor, until the Christmas special, he didnt seem to have a lot of loyalty toward her. Matt Smith cared about Amanda Pond and Rory. That was a large part of his charm and the loss of those two was as painful a moment for the Doctor as weve ever seen. I think that the Doctors affection for the companion is an essential part of his charm -- and if he treats the companion badly or cavalierly, he becomes less admirable. Discuss among yourselves.
