Spent the last two days in Ho Chi Minh City at the war museum, and the Cu Chi tunnels where thousands of Viet Cong hid, lived, thrived, fought from, during the Vietnam War. Maybe no trip to Vietnam can be complete without visiting these two places, these places which tell us so much about those dreadful years, of a nation that was bombed all over, of a nation that was gassed all over, that was crippled, but that did not let its spirit be broken, that fought back tooth and nail for its sovereignty, that came out severely wounded but victorious. Several times at the museum I had to swallow hard, when I read about the torture, saw the photographs of what happened. We live in an imperfect world. But maybe thats why we should travel, to know what happened, to know that the same country is still smiling, that there are hundreds of American tourists here roaming without fear and prejudice and only here because they want to see a beautiful country, that there is good and bad all over the world. Moved and overwhelmed. Vietnam, you teach me something every day.
