Spent this morning broadcasting a cover crop in the olive orchard.50 pounds of premium soil builder mix from Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply. The rain will help drive the seeds into the dirt. A combination of Bell Beans, Biomaster Peas, Dundale Peas, Purple Vetch, and Cayuse Oats, and Hairy Vetch & Common Vetch. This is considered a cool season nitrogen boosting cover crop. These plants will choke out some of the weeds that have taken over. Its also a chance to deal with the compaction of the soil since the drought started. Another benefit for us is to continue our work of creating opportunities for beneficial insects to occupy the farm.
