Spina Bifida… when the spinal column doesn’t close completely - TopicsExpress

Spina Bifida… when the spinal column doesn’t close completely on a babe growing inside mom, it can lead to paralysis, brain damage, & other neurological problems. Sometimes, the defect is obvious & looks like a sac pushing thru the back. Other times, it’s detected only with x-ray. Treatment includes surgery to repair the sac, if damaged; but, most treatment includes physical and emotional therapy & shunt care to help relieve the brain of extra fluid. Adding folic acid to processed foods such as breads & cereals has almost fully eradicated the defect in the US & Europe. Developing countries see a higher incidence of the defect due to poor diets.
