Spirituality. Theres infinite ways people can experience that in their life - but what fits for me is going by my personal experience. I cant imagine taking someone elses word for something so primal, so personal, and so beyond human control or comprehensive human knowing. I do know there is something awesome, intelligent, witty, creative, and yes... truly loving... behind all things. And there is meaningful purpose and flexible narrative, and we do better by seeking to be in harmony with it. And that free will is essential so that anything have meaning at all. Which means that bad things can and do happen - but the only alternative to that is that is to remove the dignity of individual free will. Would I ever proselytize about any of these things? The very idea seems ridiculous - how could spirituality based on personal experience ever be a substitute for anothers personal experience, their relationship with the All of it? Similarly, I cant stand others proselytizing to me. On the other hand - a respectful and mutual comparing of notes - always up for that. We have so much to learn from each other. War and violence justified by spiritual or religious ideas or conflicts of perspective? I cant believe we as a species have done so much of this, and continue to do so. Its deeply shameful. If your concept of a divine origination is not all love and all respectful of free will and dignity... then it has nothing to do with my experience of spirituality. Whatever it is I commune with, a still small voice of a very large universe in ephemeral unpredictable moments, or attune to in the green electrical connectivity of nature... knows that death and pain are part of the cycle of all things, so that all things can be and unfold - but death and pain inflicted due to differing perspectives about the specific nature of divinity we are imbedded in? This idea, this urge does not even occur to the living creatures of nature. As far as I can tell, the creatures of the natural world never fell out of touch with the divine they are enwrapped, embedded, completely in and of at all times. The unique flexibility of mind and heart we as a species have been given is an amazing thing. But I suspect that with this gift comes the responsibility to mindfully and heartfully choose - and choose well - what we attune to. And in the end, those choices must be fundamentally personal.
