Splintering Hope: Rough Copy Version 1 Prologue: The gunshot rang out and the deer fell dead. Nice shot Derrick, youre almost getting good! Said Jay, sarcasm heavy in his voice. Derrick looked at him, and kindly flipped him off while chuckling You have more practice than me, do you expect me to be better than you? he said while tying up the deer. Jay shouldered his rifle and said Yeah, I actually do. Derricks eyes didnt stray from the deers body Just pull the truck around you ass. He mumbled. Jay brought his truck over and they loaded the deer and themselves in, then drove back to the family cabin. The two had gone to the cabin in celebration of Jay getting his license and first car. After arriving back at the cabin, they skinned and cooked the deer for dinner. Its a shame our break doesnt last longer said Derrick referring to their summer break from school. Jay looked up from his plate I know, Ive been having so much fun. he chuckled. Its good to just get away from it all, ya know? He said finishing his third helping of deer and beans. Derrick simply nodded his approval as he too finished his plate. Im going to go pack up, I know I wont want to in the morning he said as he walked up the stairs to his bedroom. Same here bro Jay replied as he got up from the table and headed upstairs after his brother. The next day came (for the brothers) far too quickly. At six in the morning, they piled everything into the truck and started back for their house. After what felt like ten minutes, they saw the first road-sign Milltown, 7 Miles it read. Derrick let out a groan. I hate this, the return. Always feels awful as compared to hunting and camping. He said to Jay. Jay understood but wasnt going to complain. He had done this so many times that it had no effect on him anymore. Ya know Derrick, it took me about five or six trips before I realized that I.... Jay stopped mid-sentence, Before you realized what, Jay? Derrick questioned. Then he turned and saw why the car was slowing. There was a massive pile-up of cars on the other side of the road, outbound, but none of the vehicles were on. Uhm.....Jay? Derrick asked, a slight hint of concern in his voice. Just stay buckled in Dare Jay replied. Dare was the nickname Jay lovingly gave to his brother after to accepted a dare to drink a gallon of Red Hot sauce. As one may imagine, it ended horribly for Derrick, but with laughter for Jay. As they continued down the empty road leading into town, they began to see worse sights. Cars that had careened off the road and into the ditches around it, campsites set up, vacant, and covered in blood and dead bodies. Derrick began to become frantic. We gotta get home Jay, make sure dad is alright. Derrick whined. Jay swerved onto a smaller road that he knew led to their development. As their car slowly pulled into their development, they could see dead bodies littering the streets with blood all around. Jesus Christ Jay mumbled in awe of the horror that lay before them. NO! Derrick screamed leaping from the car, rifle in hand and running towards their house. Jay got his rifle and followed, but couldnt see what had made Derrick bolt like that until he got closer to the house. He realized that the door to their house was smashed in. Jay and Derrick entered the living room and saw a horrific sight. There before them, lay there father, dead. In his hands he held a nine millimeter pistol. No....no no no no no! Derrick cried and hugged his dads lifeless body. Jay looked around in shock and saw another body with three shots in its chest, and a sawed-off laying a few inches from it. You...son of a... Jay started to say, but was interrupted by his brothers screams. Jay turned about to see Derrick being grabbed by their dead father. Jay rushed over and hit what was once his father off of Derrick, causing a bookshelf to fall on their fathers body. The other body rose and came towards Derrick, who reacted by simply shooting it in the stomach. The body kept coming as Jay processed what he just saw. What the hell!? said Jay, who proceeded to shoot the body in the head. It didnt get back up. Derrick was now stood over their former father, staring at him as he grabbed for Derricks legs. Derrick was still crying What happened to you dad? Derrick said dropping to his knees. What happened? Then, a gunshot sounded, and their father stopped grabbing at Derricks legs. Derrick turned to see Jay stood behind him, gun still aimed. YOU PIECE OF SHIT! Derrick screamed as he stood up, trying to take Jay down. Jay overpowered him in an instant and pushed him back onto the floor. Get whatever food you can. said Jay as he picked up the sawn-off from the floor. We have to get out of here. He finished. Derrick silently got up and went to the kitchen as he gathered a bag full of canned food, still sobbing. The two left the house and ran for the car. As they got in, Jay tried to start it, only to be met with an engine failure. You gotta be kidding me! Jay yelled as he pounded the steering wheel, accidentally setting off the horn two times. Derrick was still crying in the back of the truck and had no response, until he heard the moans. They both looked down the street and saw a mob of bodies. Oh god, oh god, Jay start it! Start the car! Derrick yelled in fear. Jay kept trying and the engine kept failing. The bodies got within 25 feet of the car, with Jay still furiously trying to start the engine up. Were screwed man...just...Screwed. Derrick whispered. At that moment, gunshots rang out and the mob fell. Four men with hunting rifles ran to the truck, grabbed Derrick, Jay, and their gear. Then they rushed them to the house they came from.
