Spoke with an employee at the IL Secretary of State today who stated that any combination of vehicles having a GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating) of over 26,001 pounds, in which at least 10,000 pounds is being towed, requires a Class A CDL in IL. I specifically asked if this includes toter homes registered as RVs - he confirmed that if the GCWR was over the above stated requirement, a CDL is required. From the IL Secretary of State website (cyberdriveillinois): You must obtain a CDL if you operate: - Any combination of vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, providing the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. - Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds. - Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver. - A vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials. - By law, drivers who hold a valid CDL must notify the Secretary of States office of an address change or name change within 10 days and must obtain a corrected drivers license within 30 days. **There is a list of exemptions shown on the Secretary of State website, however, when I asked the employee today he specifically stated any vehicles over the above weight require a CDL to legally operate, except farm equipment. *
