Spooky Sort-Of Covers #32: Sandy Nelson - Let There Be Drums This stark track must have sounded like it came from outer space, in 1961. Mostly its just drums, although theres a half hearted guitar instrumental that drifts in and out. And I do mean guitar: theres no bass or other accompaniment, just a twangy surf-style guitar. But, what do you know, its great; strangely compelling, more so than the similar but fancier drum instrumentals Cozy Powell made in the 70s. Malcolm McLaren may have talked a good fight about the Burundi drums, but in fact all he borrowed from there for Adam & The Ants sound was the characteristic rhythm: the whole blueprint for the bands sound is right here in this Sandy Nelson record. Not to mention The XX. Some small oddnesses here. On the label of the disc in the clip, the legend On The Drums is added to the artist name, the way things were presented back in the big band days. And the composition is credited just to Sandy Nelson, whereas Wiki maintains that the guitarist (later a prominent producer) Richard Podolor got co-composer credits on these hits - sometimes only belatedly, but all along for this one. beggarscantbevegans.tumblr/ https://youtube/watch?v=zC9okWm8A6o
