Sport: Cook Islands expecting medals at Mini Games Posted at 21:19 on 23 August, 2013 UTC The Cook Islands are confident of a successful medal haul at the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna, despite sending a much smaller team than in previous events. Just eight athletes will represent Team Cook Islands next month in athletics, sailing and weightlifting - less than one percent of the total number of athletes taking part in the Games. Among the delegation is Olympic weightlifter Luisa Peters, World Championships sprinter Patricia Taea, as well as the Pacific Games sailing gold medallists. The Chef de Mission for Team Cook Islands, Robert Graham, says they still expect to do well. “The Cook Islands flag, in Wallis, will be raised a few times on the results that we’ve got at the moment and our athletes and based on what other results we are collecting within the region. When we send teams overseas it’s not just for the sake of going overseas but we do jump online and check other countries with their athletes that are going to the Games - where they are, where it places us as well - so we have a fair idea of where we will be looking at in particular codes or particular sports.” The Cook Islands team leave for Wallis and Futuna next week.
