(Sport Witness) According to reports in the Portuguese press Sporting Lisbon are looking to offload midfielder Diego Capel in the New Year. The Spaniard was linked with the Premier League club last April and speculation about Liverpool signing the player resurfaced during the last transfer window. A Bola have reported today that Sporting Lisbon will listen to offers from other clubs in January. It is has been claimed several European clubs are looking at the player and that the Portuguese club will be prepared to talk to any sides which are willing to offer €7m for the winger. Sporting Lisbon were keen for Capel to leave in the last transfer window but he ended up staying at the club as no club meet their valuation of the player. Sporting Lisbon are trying to get Capel of their books due to his salary. He is one of the highest earners at Sporting Lisbon and with the club heavily in debt they need to slash the wage bill. During the last window the club managed to offload some of their senior players who were on high salaries meaning this season manager Leonardo Jarim has had to promote youngsters from the reserves. Jarim has played the likes of William Carvalho and Eric Dyer in the first team during this campaign. Both youngsters are on relative low wages which is helping to reduce the wage bill at the club. This policy in bringing through youth has so far worked as Sporting Lisbon currently lie 2nd in the league and it seems at the moment they don’t have to rely so much on senior players like Capel. Capel was first linked with a move to Anfield in April when The Mirror reported that Liverpool were looking to take advantage of Sporting Lisbon’s financial issues. It was claimed the Reds were lining up a £10m bid for the former Sevilla player but faced competition from French side Marseille. It was then reported in August that Liverpool were looking at the 25 year old as a possible replacement for the departing Stewart Downing.
