Spread the Word to End the Word As the campaign goes for ending - TopicsExpress

Spread the Word to End the Word As the campaign goes for ending the wrongful, and therefore offensive, usage of the word retarded. Well, I agree this is very immoral and ignorant of people who say someone who is mentally disabled, or medically, mentally retarded. However, I wont be removing it from my lexicon, I believe there is a place for this word. Its all about the context. Things can be retarded, in fact, people can be retarded. How did I use that word but not offend? By definition. If I am slowed down, say stuck in traffic, my commute is therefore retarded. I would more usually say Im stuck in traffic, but you understand my example. I wont stop saying it, but I certainly never will say it offensively. The shame is that sometimes this overshadows the bigger picture. It isnt just the R-word, but its more of many many words. Like girls who look at each other, skinny, and say, Girl, youre anorexic as hell. When shes not really medically anorexic but just skinny. Well Ill let you know there are two types of anorexia, the type people are socially pushed into it, and the kind that people have serious psychological problems with it. Thus, the A-word also can be offensive, ripping through emotions like the R-word, but it remains in my lexicon given it has a true purposeful meaning. I mean, I can really keep going. Its not the word, its your context. Keep calm and dont be an ignorant person. Simple enough... but yet beyond comprehension for many. Maybe myself at times, but Im trying. I certainly have never called my friends anorexic nor will I. :)
