Spring Vlei Walk Saturday 7th. A true spring early morning but - TopicsExpress

Spring Vlei Walk Saturday 7th. A true spring early morning but with the wind becoming troublesome at about 09h00. A very good turnout of 20 people were treated to a spread of regular vlei birds also enjoying the new season, spiced up by the return of migrants such as South African Cliff Swallow, which is also an endemic, and White-throated Swallow, an intra-African breeding migrant who will be leaving us again in April/May next year. Other types of migrants have also returned – altitudinal migrants. These include Yellow-billed Egret, Glossy Ibis and Cattle Egret. Altitudinal migration is an interesting phenomenon – although perhaps less so from our winter! Other interesting sightings included African Marsh Harrier flying with nesting material and 2 sightings of South African Shelduck with young ones in tow. All in all a most pleasant morning. Don’t forget October’s walk, also at 07h00 when we should see some more arrivals.
