Springfield Safe Routes to School Alliance If you have a child attending school in Springfield, you should know about the work that the Springfield Safe Routes to School Alliance is doing to promote safe walking and biking to schools. This program works with participating schools to identify the specific issues that hamper walking or biking. Solutions can include infrastructure (e.g. bike racks and sidewalks), organizational assistance, law enforcement, etc. For example, in Springfield the Alliance has organized walking school buses and bike racks will soon be installed at several schools. Local organizers Karen Pohlman and Nicole Bourdon provided the following to pass on: The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program creates sustainable and comprehensive walking and biking programs with our School Partners and their communities. The creation of strong partnerships with community, governmental and non-profit organizations with similar missions and causes are vital to fulfilling this goal. The Springfield Safe Routes to School Alliance is a group of community partners that reinforce the work of SRTS by supporting programs that impact active living. Organize, track, develop and provide framework to initiate and sustain consistent active transportation programs (i.e. Walking School Bus Programs) in collaboration with other community partners. We help mentor other communities throughout the region to promote healthy programs and are a nationally recognized model. • National Safe Routes to School Oberstar Award. • Published on RWJF National Institute for Health Promotion Research Web Clearinghouse: Salud America!
