Aside from being a poet, essayist, historian, naturalist and philosopher, Thoreau was an amateur botanist. Elizabeth Fries Ellet, a prolific writer on assignment with a New York newspaper, came west in 1852 and wrote about what she described as the wild untouched Minnesota landscape in her book “Summer Rambles in the West.”
