Squamish Residents, if you want to help and try to get that DERELICT SHIP removed from our waters.... please send an e-mail voicing your concerns to D.F.O. Marine Pollution ...at ... [email protected] Here is my e-mail, with all the dates and info you will need... Thank You I would like to bring to your attention, the very real possibility of an Environmental Disaster, waiting to happen in the waters of Howe Sound, across from Shannon Falls, in Squamish. A 200 ft long Derelict Ship, has been tied up to a Buoy in Squamish since March 7th/14 ... The ship has dangerous cargo and hazardous material onboard. ( Diesel fuel, 100’s of cans of paint, Heavy Duty Batteries/acid and other toxic chemicals). The ship also has a 10 – 12 inch list to the port side, as well as no power to the engines, or to Bilge pumps, and no Navigation lights. The Coast Guard ordered the ship’s owner Mr Steen Larsen to install some Navigation lights, back in early March, but he ( Larsen ) is yet to do so. The Buoy that this ship is tied up to, hasn’t been used for about 12 years, therefor it hasn’t been maintained either. On May 28/14 the ship broke free from the Buoy, and luckily an alert Boom boat Operator, working close by, stopped the ship from being beached,or possibly hung up on one of many sandbars in the area, or even tipping on her side. On July 18/14 a Tugboat Skipper, concerned about the security of the Vessel, ... took a picture of the frayed tie-down rope, worried it was about to break. On Aug 2/14 the tie-down rope and the cable from the ship became entangled, pulling the Buoy UNDERWATER The owner of this ship has a history of Sunken Derelict Boats, with the last one in early January of this year ( The Elf had over 1500 litres of Diesel fuel, as well as other contaminants ) that spilled into the Mamquam Blind Channel. It would be quite a shame, if nothing was done about this situation, and a spill occurred, the aftermath would be devastating for Howe Sound. Especially since the absence of Heavy Industry in the Sound, and all the hard work the Squamish Streamkeepers have done, to ensure the return of the Herring, which brings in the Dolphins, followed by the Orca’s. In early March of this year we had close to 400 Dolphins and about 20 Orca’s in our area, after an absence of 30 years or more. An Environmental spill would destroy any chance of that happening ever again, or at least for a long long time. I have enclosed some pics as well... thank you for your time Tim Cyr
