Sri Rama Jayam – Ravana Shanka Nivaranam Hearing these extremely painful words of Sita, Hanuman replied to her in a way that was cooling to her anguished heart. He said “O great lady, I am a messenger who has come here at the order of Sri Rama for acquainting you with the state of affairs regarding him and Lakshmana. O Princess of Videha! Sri Rama is doing well. He ordered me to inform you about his welfare. Rama, who is the best among the knower’s of Vedas, who can wield the Brahma Astra is enquiring about your welfare. Even Lakshmana conveys his respectful greetings to you. Sita was filled with joy hearing these words and said “everyone will at least after a long time have a spell of happiness” Hanuman was delighted to see her face to face. Confidence was generated in both their minds and they began to converse with each other. Hanuman began to approach her. As Hanuman got closer, Sita began to suspect that he might be Ravana in disguise. Sita now sat there on the ground dazed with deep sorrow. Hanuman finding her frightened and filled with suspicion arising from fear, made a full prostration before her, but she did not even open her eyes. Sita, finding Hanuman prostrating before her for a very long time became a little bold at heart and said as follows: If you are really the trickster Ravana, you are giving me only great pain by your presence. You are not doing me any service. But it may be that my doubt is misplaced. For your sight does impart some happiness to my mind. If you are really a messenger of Rama may good befall you. O Hanuman I request you to tell me all about Sri Rama. Please speak about him. You are attracting my mind. Speak about the greatness of Rama, the master of my life. After thinking over the pros and cons, Sita concluded that this monkey is Ravana. Entertaining this idea in her mind, Sita kept on looking at the monkey without speaking anything. Hanuman could understand Sita’s predicament. So he began to speak more comforting words to her. This is what Rama is: he is brilliant like the sun; comforting to all like the moon; lord of all like Kubera. World famous; endowed with as much prowess as Vishnu himself; truthful like Brihaspati; sweet tongued; charming, indignant when needed, terror to his foes, great car warrior and a noted personality in the world. That Sri Rama on the strength of whose arms the world’s welfare rests was attracted far away from the Ashram by the illusory deer. In his absence you were abducted by Ravana. That Ravana will soon perish. That Rama whose scorching arrows are going to kill Ravana has sent me as a messenger. Deeply immersed in sorrow due to your separation he ordered me to convey to you news of his welfare. Lakshmana, who bestows joy on all, also conveys his greetings to you and enquiries about your welfare. Sugriva is conveying his respectful enquiries about your welfare. Rama in the company of Lakshmana and Sugriva is always thinking about you. It is indeed fortunate that you are keeping alive in the midst of these Rakshasa women. You are soon going to see Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva along with an army of crores of monkeys. I am Hanuman, Sugriva’s minister. I have come here to see you through my prowess placing my feet as it were on Ravana’s head by crossing Lanka. O great lady! Drive away from your mind the doubts and suspicions you entertain about me. Believe what I say. Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!
