St George’s 2 Melita 0 St George’s had the better of joint-leaders Melita to boost their hopes of pushing for promotion. Fresh from their stunning FA Trophy victory over Naxxar Lions, much more was expected from the Amateurs who were outplayed by their opponents throughout. Gabriel Okechukwu was the driving force for the Saints who have now moved up to fourth place in the standings on 16 points, level with Gudja United and three adrift of top spot albeit with a game more. St George’s almost struck after six minutes when Brandon Muscat picked the unmarked Mark Tanti but the Saints striker was anticipated by George Gribbon. St George’s missed another good opportunity on 37 minutes when Emerson Amaira picked Anthony Bonello inside the area but shot straight into the hands of Melita goalkeeper Philip Schranz. The Melita no.1 again distinguished himself two minutes later when he denied the goalbound Okechukwu. On the restart, Melita threatened when Julian Galea’s shot was pushed away by Saints goalkeeper Claude Carbonaro. But it was St George’s who took a deserved lead when Okechukwu was released by Larson Mallia and the Nigerian striker kept his cool to slot the ball past Schranz. The Saints made it 2-0 on 64 minutes when Okechukwu released Tanti who hit past Schranz. Melita threatened two minutes later when from a corner action Gribbon nodded the ball into the path of Galea who fired just wide. The Amateurs had one last chance ten minutes from time when Galea hit a firm drive that was cleared off the line by Noah Ojuola. St George’s: C. Carbonaro, D. Zerafa, Larson Mallia (O. Giordano), N.
