St. Joseph’s College to organize PSA campaign in Sept Darjeeling, 31 Aug 2014: As part of its social responsibility, the mass communication and journalism department of St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling will be organizing a Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign during September-end this year. Messages related to the public interest will be relayed through the campaign which is christened “Sachetna” or hear it loud. “We started this campaign last year and got good response which prompted us to take it forward this year too. The primary objective behind our campaign is to relay messages in the public interest which are disseminated for the good of the Hills citizens,” said Vikram Rai, senior lecturer of the mass-comm department and one of the brains behind the initiative. The college located to the North of Darjeeling town has always been proactive when it came to associating itself with social issues plaguing the Hills over the years. “The objective is to change public attitude and behavior towards various social issues. There are agencies involved in social affairs, but we want the public who are in isolation to be a part of such causes. For this we must have programs that involve the citizens to get holistic results,” pointed Rai. The campaign will be organized in association with the police department and the Darjeeling Press Guild (DPG), an umbrella body of journalists operating in Darjeeling sub-division. Newly elect, DPG general secretary Pranab Chhetri said, “As journalists, we too have certain responsibilities besides our work. The initiative taken by the mass-com department is commendable and we are happy to be associated in such social events, which can prove to be beneficial to the public”. This year, messages that will be relayed through the PSA film festival at the college premise will include issues like anti-women-child trafficking, child labor, gender bias, anti-smoking and following traffic rules among the many that have been taken up by the organizers.
