St. Lucie County Sheriff Mascara releases additional details concerning the Jan. 14 incident at 1501 Ave. Q, Fort Pierce Tuesday, Jan. 28: St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara today released additional details concerning the incident involving Mr. Gregory Hill, of 1501 Ave. Q, Fort Pierce, that took place on Jan. 14. According to Sheriff Mascara, deputies found that Mr. Hill at the time of the incident was in possession of a black Kel-Tec 9-millimeter handgun. Sheriff Mascara also said that Deputy Christopher Newman fired his weapon four times at Mr. Hill. Sheriff Mascara said, “During the time immediately following the confrontation between deputies and Mr. Hill, deputies believed that Mr. Hill had barricaded himself in the home with a minor child, and members of the Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team made numerous attempts to contact Mr. Hill’s cell phone without success. Detectives later determined that the child was not in the home at the time of the incident or afterward.” The Sheriff said, “Following the confrontation, detectives obtained a search warrant for the home. During the search of the home, Mr. Hill’s cell phone was located in the kitchen and was not near him.” The Nineteenth Judicial District Medical Examiner’s Office has performed an autopsy of Mr. Hill, which has determined that he died as a result of gunshot wounds. Authorities are awaiting the results of tests on the fluid and tissue samples obtained during the autopsy. This could take several weeks. The investigation is continuing by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.
