St. Scholastica Monastery celebrates 135 years in Arkansas! St. Scholastica Monastery is the first daughter-house of the Benedictine Sisters in Ferdinand, Indiana. Our foundation started with an invitation by the Bishop to assist the German families who were settling in Arkansas River Valley area. It was a pioneering time due to the innovation of the railway system, therefore, parishes and schools needed to be established. In response to the request of the bishop the Ferdinand Benedictines sent four young sisters to begin our community on January 23, 1879. Over the years we had over 300 sisters in community. Today we have in community 44 Sisters and 2 novices. Two images below is a CAKE made by Coleta Dooley the sister of our kitchen manager, Charla. One is of our community pin/logo and the other is the monastery. The sisters will enjoy cake treat in honor of our 135th anniversary!
