Stage Fright Performance Anxiety These are names that are used to describe that sick, nervous feeling that so many riders feel before combat, even though combat can mean something as benign as a training level dressage test. Humans evolved with a fight or flight response installed, and while that may have been appropriate when suddenly faced by a woolly mammoth or sabre tooth tiger, it seems a bit over the top to have the same feelings before a beginner novice show jumping round when ALL THOSE PEOPLE are watching!!!. But it`s how we are wired, and one way to lessen its effects on our ability to perform under pressure is to get out there, in an actual arena, and get used to feeling the tension, and dealing despite it. Just because we are Superstars in the safety of our familiar home rings doesn`t mean we can take that same game on the road. Practice pressure to learn to cope with pressure.
