Stagnating dairy market leads to ‘stale’ milk For #dairy farmers who reside in the outskirts of Beijing, this winter has been an especially bleak time in terms of businesses. A recession has meant that every morning, they’ve been pouring tons of #milk into the gutters or upon open farmland. “My family drinks milk for breakfast, lunch and dinner; and we also use milk to feed other livestock. But there’s still a lot more,” explained one farmer. Cow breeders from Beijing’s Xiazhuang village are, in fact, complaining that with milk prices plummeting, the market is at its worst in the past 10 years. As a consequence of the oversupply, they have had to reduce to amount of feed so that the cows produce less milk. One of the biggest problems that these dairy farmers are facing is that larger companies are preferring imported milk. Mr. Dong, a milk purchaser, who sources local produce for larger dairy companies, says that increasingly his clients are either preferring imported milk or that from bigger dairy production facilities. Apart from that, there is the perception battle, with a number of consumers believing that Chinese brands are unable to compete with their international counterparts.
