Standards essential for global trade — SONon October 18, 2013 at 1:26 am in Business THE Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Joseph Odumodu, has said that international standards are powerful tools for the opening up of global markets, create enabling business environments and spur economic growth across nations. Speaking on this year’s World Standards Day, with the theme: “International Standards Ensure Positive Change,” Odumodu said standards also assist in detailing specifications that can help nations mitigate and adapt to climate change in the complex international environment. He said all of these are in the focus of the 2013 World Standards Day celebrations held across the world on October 14, and which is being jointly coordinated by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). According to him, international standards represent the consensus view of the world’s leading experts in industry sectors ranging from energy utilities and energy efficiency to transportation, management systems, climate change, healthcare, safety as well as information and communications technology (ICT). Also, the experts in volunteering their knowledge in the service of public interest in these and many other subjects, come together to create standards that share innovation with all the world’s countries and so provide business, government and society with a solid platform for positive change. The SON boss explained that standards support economic growth in developing countries like Nigeria by outlining best practices that enable them to avoid “reinventing the wheel,” noting that standards are becoming increasingly important in helping cities develop more intelligent and sustainable infrastructures and making them better places to live.
