Stanley the robotic Volkswagen Touareg managed to complete the challenge back in 2006, and since then driverless technology has continued to grow. At CES this year, BMW demoed a driverless car which could put itself round a racetrack. The automotive brand also has vehicles out in Germany which are totally self-sufficient and currently being tested on the Autobahn. Google has grabbed the bull by the horns and gone straight in and ditched the steering wheel altogether. Earlier this year it unveiled a completely autonomous vehicle which it plans to build more than 100 prototypes of. Is it bad? Legislation regarding the level of control a car can take is hugely strict. Right now, the buck stops with the driver, not the car. This could, however, very quickly change once driverless technology takes over. Ex-Stig Ben Collins has expressed concerns that the margin for computer failure is too great. He has a point, as a Windows-style blue screen while doing 70mph down the motorway wouldnt be ideal, especially if you had no steering wheel or controls. Prototype version of Googles driverless car From an insurance and accident point of view, it also raises the question of blame. Say someone gets knocked down, does it become the cars fault or the drivers? That said, the chance of computer error is far less than that of human error. You also have to consider how much safer roads would be if cars were communicating with each other electronically - they could warn each other of an accident ahead for example. A central issue is that, in order for a car to become truly autonomous, the government is going to need to have faith in the electronics and allow them to take over from the driver completely. When is it coming? A driverless car really isnt a long way off. Prototypes demoed to Digital Spy all left us thinking that the only real barrier to them was in fact legislation, not the technology itself. Obviously its easier for a computer to manage motorway driving than the complexities of a city, but both can be done. All you need to do is see the video below from BMW and you should get an idea of how close we really are.
