#StarTrekTheNextGeneration belated live blogging. Going to try to break them into smaller, single episode posts. S2E07 unnatural selection Troi on Dr. Polanski “Ive never met a more dedicated physician.” Implied diss of Dr. Crusher. Why is Worf so keen to board the Lantree? Everyone on it is dead, so there is no rush. I dont think anyone thought through the security implications of allowing any Starfleet captain to seize control of any other Starfleet ship remotely. “I recommend against contact, Captain.” Worf, 10 minutes ago you were all gung ho to board another ship where everyone had died of unknown causes. Did the doctor just propose packing one of the children in the styrofoam? This is the second time that a force field like thing has caused the diffraction of light. Im curious how technically that special effect was implemented. With modern digital editing it would be trivial, especially with still shots like these. But that seems tough with 1989 technology. I believe chief OBrien has been named for the first time! Yay! Theyre going to beam the styralite, which is already containing the child, 2 milliseconds before the child. That just raises even more questions! Will this leave the child unshielded before they meet him? How is this even possible? Styralite is apparently vacuum formed plastic. Apparently if you’re telepathic you still have a strong, detectable personality while in stasis. I dont. But. Thats not how stasis. What? “His immune system is so advanced it may not be possible for him to contract a disease.” It’s magical! The characters dont know it yet, but it looks like the question is going to be how dothe ubermensches somehow cause the aging disease in others? The “person arguing for something gets agreement but doesnt realize it and carries on for a bit” gag seems inappropriate in a serious discussion about a deadly disease. Apparently in the future they have lost access to 20th century hazmat technology. If they cant use the force fields they have no idea how to protect themselves. Apparently the special effects budget went up in season 2. So far weve had Picard studying a hologram of a solar system, Geordi using some detector on Data that emitted a glowing ring, and now we have Pulaski dissolving the plastic over the child. These were all actually kind of neat. I now see why people were surprised at the boy when he showed up. He was described as a child but he looks 18. Picard asks the computer for the time it responds “0322, exactly.” Why would it need to say that it was “exactly?” Doesnt computer always provide the time exactly? Also, for exactly, where are the seconds? The downside to Dr Pulaski’s plan to use to shuttlecraft as an isolation chamber is that if there is a contamination of a disease they cannot detect, how can they know if and when they have sterilized its so that the shuttlecraft and Data are not carriers? Apparently telekinesis is canon. Did not know that. Okay I just figured it out. The flu that the other ship had which mentioned twice which means its Important. The flu was the first disease that the engineered children were exposed to and something about their immune system cause this insane aging effect in others. Apparently the ubermensches’ bodies spray antibodies into the air to fight airborne pathogens. Who thought was a good idea? Everyone is fired. Dr Pulaski: “and since our DNA is self replicating...” Data: “The process is irreversible.” But it was able to be done in the first place. If you could alter your genes in the first place why cant you do it back the other way? If the trigger is the antibodies from the ubermensches, why is it contagious? Unless somehow infected people start producing the magic airborne antibodies? Thats what you get when you play God. Summary of problem at 11 minutes from end. Why is nobody mentioning poor Data? Hes just as stranded as the children. Yet again their old person makeup manages to make people look worse than actual elderly people. Theyre apparently going to solve the problem with the transporter. But there are problems, serious technobabble problems. Fortunately Data can technobabble fix them. I am happy to discover that Googles voice recognition understands the word “technobabble.” Let’s everyone just stare agog at Dr Pulaski for a while. For a long beat. That wont make her feel self conscious at all. What are dramatic scene. I hope Chief O’Brien is able to push some buttons and save the day. The transporter ruins everything.
