Started my Suikoden game today on the Vita. Ill try to get around to posting updates as the game progresses, but I really encourage anyone that liked the SNES JRPGS like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger to pick it up and give it a chance. Its only like 6 bucks on PSN. Disclaimer: I do carry nostalgia for this game, and totally recognize that I am willing to ignore little faults about it because of how much I love the positive aspects of it. I have basically just started the game and have had the story set up for me.. That being said, a couple of things have already stood out to me. It has been roughly 15 years since I have played this game on my PSone and I have had many gaming experiences since then. There have been huge changes in the way games are made and played. When I think of JRPGs on the PSone, I think of low-poly characters over pre-rendered environments. Suikoden was released in 1995 (a year after FFVI, and two before FFVII) and has the same kind of presentation as a late SNES game, with flat castles and sprite characters. The two main traits that have stuck out to me is the quality of the soundtrack and the quality of the dialogue. Music is hard to describe in words, and is ultimately subjective anyway, but I would say that it is definitely up to par with anything else in the genre. The dialogue can be interpreted as somewhat corny in some ways, but the characters personalities are well-defined within it (which in my opinion is more important than being creative or witty). Here is a video that will provide a bit of a visual aid to what I have written so far for the people that havent had a chance to try it, but I have tagged people that I think might be interested or have played it before. https://youtube/watch?v=Ae9O1BUWQLA
