Started re-watching the dub for Dragon Ball. Noticed 3 things in doing so: 1. I forgot how much I LOVE this show. =) 2. I dont think Ive ever watched the whole thing uncut before! Only the edited version which aired on Toonami back in 2002 until the series finished. 3. The tone of the series actually started getting more serious a lot earlier than I remembered. It starts getting really serious when we first see Goku transform into a giant monkey for the first time, or really even before that really since they would have been roasted alive come morning if there wasnt a full moon that night. Not to say that the perverse humor of the series isnt there, its there in spades! (Youve got basically the epitome of the dirty old man there almost 100% of the time once the training begins.) I suppose Z is when you get the full blown shift, and thats really where the sci-fi started flooding into the series full force. I also laugh at the comments about Goku not being human... If only the other characters knew... >.< (Well, according to Z, Roshi actually apparently did know the full story, but thats a can of worms Im not gonna open just yet.) Actually, there have been a bunch of scenes which become much funnier when you know how things unfold later in the series. (And Im sure FUNimation took that into account when they were dubbing it. After all, they started off marketing the later series over here for us first. >..< One thing I will mention, yes Im prepared for the filler when it comes up... If I recall correctly, its not AS bad as it gets with later series which would follow in Dragon Balls wake, such as Naruto, Bleach, and the GOD AWFUL LONG AND STILL GOING One Piece. (But to be a bit more fair to One Piece, Im sure that some people in Japan wondered back in the day if Dragon Ball would ever end when Akira Toriyama was still writing it each week. >.< ) And, if youre wondering what the hell Im talking about or why the hell I LOVE this show(/franchise; because lets face it, it really is a full blown franchise) well, I cant quite put into words what I love about it and do my feelings justice. =) If you cant stand it, I understand. The series has its fair share of quirks and I make fun of them just as much as much as anybody else who loves the show too. (Or rather, anybody else who loves the show and isnt an arrogant weeaboo or single-minded prick. -_- ) The raunchy humor, the timeless and loveable characters, the epic fights which ensue (a tad later in the series than where I am right now)... Again, I feel like I cant describe why I love it without doing it justice. Itd be the same if you asked me why I loved Star Wars or Godzilla. I just cant say anything else besides I like what I like and I LOVE what I LOVE
