State Squad to restore deteriorating environment formed From our Staff Correspondent DIBRUGARH, November 9: A squad to restore the deteriorating environment has been formed by the teachers and students of Centre for Studies in Geography recently. This squad has been named “Eco–Restoration Squad” with a motto to protect, restore, and promote awareness about the environment in all the possible ways. The Chairperson of this squad is Dr Kalpana Deka Kalita and the executive members are Dr Shukla Acharjee, Nitashree Mili and Arundhati Phukan Gogoi. The squad comprising of all post graduate students of the Centre for Studies in Geography took their first project or operation to restore environment from the Dibrugarh University Campus itself. The squad members started their first project of campus by cleaning and collecting waste bottles and used them for plantation. The squad of 23 members divided themselves into three groups where one group prepared the plants and the soil mixture for plantation. The other two groups went out to collect waste bottles and wrappers and plastic bags of chips, chocolates and other degradable and non–degradable waste. According to Sukla Acharjee, the squad members found more than 300 plastic waste bottles and around 13–15 kg of plastic bags and other waste just in 460 metres from the gate of Centre for Studies in Geography through Canteen No. 3 till the administrative building of Dibrugarh University. The squad members brought these bottles and used them for planting trees. 41 new plants were planted in the Centre for Studies in Geography. This first act of restoring environment by planting trees in waste bottles collected from the campus and disposing the waste materials collected brought a great encouragement for the whole squad and encouraged them to take and plan such effective measures to restore, protect and create awareness among all.
