State environment team likely to visit mudslide-hit Ukhrul’s North Tusom today Courtesy: MU NEWS IMPHAL, Oct 20 : A team of state environment department is expected to visit mudslide hit North Tusom village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district tomorrow, sources said. Besides overseeing the affected portions of the Tusom peak which houses the water source of the Tangkhul community inhabited village, the team will be studying the massive mudslide and subsequent rumour of eruption of lava like ‘black soil’ that hit the remote village since last Sunday (October 13). Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Preshow Shimray of the Manipur Legislative Assembly who is the local MLA of the affected area, speaking to Manipur Update this evening said that he had asked the district officials and state environment department officials to visit and study the situation. Reports reaching here said the mudslide which was started since last Sunday at Tusom peak measuring more than 500 metres has blocked the Somra (Myanmar)-Tusom (Manipur) route in north eastern part of the border district. It has started to pollute and destroy the village’s decades old water source-- the nearby streams forcing the villagers to search for another alternative. It also severely affected many paddy fields and other vegetation in and around the landslide zone, according to reports from the remote village. Meanwhile seeking assistance from the authorities, the Tusom village authority have informed that the incident has nothing to do with rumour of erupting lava like materials and sought assistance from the government as sick and needy ones could not move forward.
