NDEM is in monitor status for the state of Nevada. National Preparedness Level for Wildfire Activity: PL 1 – LOW Preparedness Level 1: Minimal large fire activity nationally. Most Geographic Areas have low to moderate fire danger. There is little or no commitment of National Resources. Western Great Basin Preparedness Level for Wildfire Activity: PL 1 – LOW Preparedness Level 1: No large wildland fires in progress. Most units have low to moderate fire danger. Number and size of fires within normal range for that time of year. Little or no commitment of other than local resources. National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS): No Current Alerts The Secretary of Homeland Security has not issued an elevated or imminent alert at this time; we remain at a heightened level of vigilance. dhs.gov/alerts ELKO – WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY & HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK The National Weather Service in Elko has issued a winter weather advisory for snow, which is in effect from 10 pm this evening to 7 pm Thursday. The winter storm watch is no longer in effect. Snow accumulations; 3 to 7 inches in the valleys. 1 to 2 feet in the mountains, with locally higher amounts possible. Amounts may exceed 3 feet on portions of the Ruby Mountains. Timing; rain showers will begin this morning, changing to all snow by later tonight through the Thursday morning commute. Snow could become heavy at times Thursday. The snow will begin to taper off by Thursday evening, with snow showers persisting Friday. Locations include: Wells, Pequop Summit, Elko, Spring Creek, Carlin Impacts; widespread snowfall will create hazardous driving conditions on area roadways. Roads will become slick and snow covered especially on the higher passes and summits. Please plan your trip accordingly and allow extra time to reach your destination. This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of east central Nevada, north central Nevada, northeast Nevada, northwest Nevada and south central Nevada. Day one - today and tonight. A very moist winter storm will be impacting northern Nevada starting today and last through Thursday and Friday. A number of winter weather advisories and warnings have been issued. Days two through seven - Thursday through Tuesday. Winter storm system will pull out of the area Thursday and Friday, bring cold and quiet conditions to the area for the weekend. LAS VEGAS – WIND ADVISORY & HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK The national weather service in Las Vegas has issued a wind advisory for the Las Vegas valley, especially the far western areas, which is in effect from 11 pm this evening to 8 pm Thursday. Winds: southwesterly winds gusting up to 55 mph on the far west side of the valley and possibly up to 40 mph elsewhere. Timing: winds will increase late tonight, peak during the day Thursday, and decrease Thursday evening. Locations: Mountains Edge, Summerlin, the 215 beltway. Impacts: strong crosswinds could impact travel on the 215 beltway on the west side of the valley, especially for high profile vehicles. Strong winds can also blow down trees and blow away unsecured items. This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of southern Nevada. Day one - today and tonight Downslope winds will increase tonight, especially on the far west side of the valley. A wind advisory is in effect beginning at 11 pm. Days two through seven - Thursday through Tuesday Downslope winds will persist through Thursday, and the wind advisory remains in effect until 8 pm. Light rain may fall on Friday, then hazardous weather is not likely Saturday through Tuesday. RENO - SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT Heavy rainfall likely in western Nevada late tonight and Thursday with light snows possible Friday morning. A winter storm is expected to move into western Nevada tonight and Continue through Thursday. Deep moisture associated with this Storm will bring periods of heavy rain to portions of western Nevada. At this time it appears the highway 50 and I-80 corridors will see the heaviest precipitation with rainfall amounts of ½ to 3/4 inch possible. The rest of western Nevada including along Highway 95 may see lighter amounts in the 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch range. Snow levels Thursday morning will drop to between 5500 and 6000 feet, bringing accumulating snows of several inches to some foothill locations such as Virginia City. Cooler air will continue to move south bringing snow levels down to the valley floors Thursday night. Another weak system may bring light snow accumulations to the valley floors late Thursday night and Friday, which has potential to impact the Friday morning commute. Please exercise caution if traveling tonight into Friday morning. Slow down in areas of heavy rain Thursday and on slushy or snow packed roads Friday morning. Travelers heading west over the Sierra on Thursday should be prepared for heavy snows, chain controls, and delays. Enjoy, be safe and make it a good one today!
