Statement From A Friend: Good Day Ms. Harris. Your page has been set ablaze by some of the recent discussion topics. I understand all the opinions and the passion behind them. I will offer my own and the reasoning it is based on. I found myself listening to the Oprah station on XM radio a few years ago while traveling and caught the entirety of a panel of Women discussing the path to home ownership. Most of the advice was sound and proven. There were six women on the panel, including what sounded like at least two African American women. The advice offered by one of the AA women was to get married, get your house, get divorced and take it. Or better yet, marry him, and take HIS house. This advice was endorsed by the other AA woman on the panel. This despite one of the other women on the panel suggesting it was basically stealing and was not really sound financial planning. I want you to understand that this is no longer about women being gold diggers or taking advantage of men. This is now about men protecting assets and income. I can only speak on my own experiences. I lost a VERY nice home and lots of income in a divorce. Going into my current marriage I prioritized protecting my retirement income and property I owned prior. This is the reality. I refuse to comment on the actions and attitudes of women. That is not a mans place. I will do what I must to protect myself and advise other men to do the same. No name-calling required.
