Statement by the Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch on the Launch of the National Conservation Plan Today marked the launch of the National Conservation Plan (NCP), which will provide a coordinated approach to conservation efforts across the country with an emphasis on enabling Canadians to conserve and restore lands and waters in and around their communities. The NCP includes significant additional investments over five years to secure ecologically sensitive lands, support voluntary conservation and restoration actions, and strengthen marine and coastal conservation. The Plan will expand opportunities for partners, including municipalities, environmental interest groups, hunters and anglers, landowners and community groups, to take practical actions to safeguard the land and water around them. Today, our government committed $252 million over five years to protect our breathtaking natural environment. This ambitious plan will see Our Government commit to three priorities: - Conserving Canadas Lands - Restoring Canadas Ecosystems - Connection Canadians to Nature Canadians have always had a strong connection to our natural environment, and this plan will ensure that our lands and water are conserved and restored for the benefit of future generations, whilst providing a way for Canadians to connect with nature close to home. The National Conservation Plan will play a vital role in ensuring the sustainability of our nations greatest resources, and will our country maintains its natural beauty from coast to coast to coast for years to come. The National Conservation Plan will among other initiatives; secure almost 4,000 km² of ecologically sensitive private lands; support partners in the delivery of hundreds of local projects to protect species at risk, and take steps to improve water quality. Our Government is deeply committed to working together with all Canadians to ensure an effected stewardship of Canadas rich natural heritage in the present and for many years to come.
