Statement from Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director, Theatr Gen - TopicsExpress

Statement from Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director, Theatr Gen (Welsh-language National theatre) It is with huge sadness that I hear of this retrograde step by Bristol City Council to remove funding for Show of Strength, and I urge you to reconsider. I have been very aware of the first rate work that Show of Strength have done over the years, playing a tremendously influential role in the regeneration of South Bristol. Their work is widely acknowledged as being an influence to other theatre makers across the UK and beyond, particularly those engaged in community based projects (as we are), and in the development of new work and new artists. In a time when it is vitally important that all members of the community, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds and communities, get involved in the arts, Show of Strength has been a shining example and a leading light. And when so many aspect of our social, economic and cultural wellbeing is being squeezed, it is imperative that people from all walks of life have an opportunity through creative visioning to see life at its brightest and at its most vital. The arts offer such optimism and promise, and is so regularly undervalued as a means of transcending hard times, and as a transformative tool to create hope, opportunity and economic activity (directly and indirectly). When times are hard, we need more art, not less. With their particular brand of work, and outstanding record, Show of Strength represents what’s most bright and most vital, and most optimistic about the subsidised arts sector, that without public subsidy cannot survive. It’s imperative you don’t turn out this light! And I urge you to reconsider your decision.
