Statement of Purpose for Leo Jenkins In my lifetime I have - TopicsExpress

Statement of Purpose for Leo Jenkins In my lifetime I have known adversity. Having come from a family under the poverty line, I learned how to take care of myself at a young age. My first job paid $5.15 an hour. I worked my way up the chain of command in the restaurant business to management, where I learned the basics of business administration hands on. Seeking a better life for my family I entered trade school and served an apprenticeship, at times having to sleep in my car hundreds of miles from home. After mastering my trade and its administration, I decided to open my own business. I saved my pennies to buy the bare minimum amount of equipment needed and filed for a business license. My first year as a masonry contractor was done out of the back of a hatchback, but I was able to make do. I taught myself how to do payroll, file various reports and tax returns, keep accounts, write contracts, communicate with customers, merchants, and employees, and advertise in the appropriate market. When I did not have resources I improvised and adapted. When I was lacking knowledge I found ways to obtain it, including supporting myself through community college and university. In my career I have gained fiscal administration experience in the public sector. It has been my honor to serve as a City Councilmen and a Board Member of the local Public Health District for two terms. Through these positions I have learned that elements of the public sector function like private business. Local governments strive to provide a service to the public, with the ultimate measure of fiscal success being the breakeven point rather then turning a profit. Municipalities are businesses, elected officials are the directors, and constituents are the shareholders. Just as a business owner must, a public official must often make difficult decisions for the benefit of the entity and its vested parties. Family is important to me. Through my academic and career pursuits I have been married and have three children. I have a strong moral compass with an emphasis on putting family first. Ethical business practices mean a productive environment where profits can be made, and families can be supported. A good business administrator knows that productivity is directly related to morale. Having been an employee and an employer, I know that business is based on relationships. Honesty, integrity, reliability, and good ethics are important parts of any business venture. These are all qualities I possess. My experiences have put me on the path towards a graduate degree in business administration. A Masters in Business Administration from Washington State University would allow me to utilize my current experience and further my carrier to its fullest potential. Either way my path takes me, into the public or private sector, an MBA will give me the expertise I need to be a more effective fiscal administrator and marketeer. Knowing that the Washington State University is a world famous academic institution, I expect any graduate degree offered by the University to be extremely rigorous in nature. My family and I are committed to my goals and are ready to take on this undertaking together. Please consider my admission to the Masters of Business Administration program.
