Statement on arrest of Adilur Khan, Secretary of Odhikar Odhikar, a self-appointed human rights organization,has published reports on the Government action in clearing the occupation of Dhaka’s ShaplaChottor by Hefazat-e-Islam, a fundamentalist group. Hefazat had made a 13 point charter of demands and was initially allowed to protest peacefully. Here is a link to BBC report on their demands. Note that report states the “government of Sheikh Hasina has sought to treat Hefazat softly, and preferred to engage in negotiation.” bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-22424708 However, Hefazat resorted to violence and arson, which was well covered by Bangladesh media. Note all the private shops on fire. youtube/watch?v=K_Elvpn0eg8 Hefazat activists had occupied ShaplaChottor and were finally cleared out after their violent protests on the night of May 5. The clearing operation was also covered by the media. Here is news footage from that night by a private TV channel that is owned by a Bangladesh opposition party leader.Note that the police are using non-lethal means and the only casualty seen in the footage is police officer. youtube/watch?v=7wYWbDLe5mY Total casualties that night were 11, including police personnel. However, Hefazat and our opposition party the BNP began a campaign claiming 2500 were killed by the police. Pictures of thousands of bodies were distributed by both Hefazat and BNP, which in fact turned out to be pictures from the earthquake in Haiti and the Jonestown massacre in the US. This demonstrates the malicious intent of this false propaganda. This propaganda also ran the risk of inflaming the passion of other fundamentalist groups and inciting them to violence as well. In the end, even Human Rights Watch issued a statement that these casualty reports are untrue and that the actual casualties were much lower. However, Odhikar continued to distribute a report that at least 61 people were killed by the Government. The Government wrote a letter to Odhikar refuting their report. Odhikar did not respond. The Government again wrote to Odhikar challenging the number of casualties and asking for details, such as names of the victims. Odhikar could not provide any. At this point, it became clear that Odhikar’s report was false and politically motivated. This is a false accusation of mass murder against the Government. This is an extremely serious accusation. Making a false accusation of murder is a criminal offence.
