Statement on events at the University of Warwick: On Wednesday - TopicsExpress

Statement on events at the University of Warwick: On Wednesday 3rd December there was a national day of action called for Free Education by the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC) and the Student Assembly Against Austerity. The day saw demonstrations across the country, including one organised by Defend Education at UEA. Video footage shows police disbanding a seemingly peaceful sit-in by a group of students at Warwick University by spraying CS gas (tear gas) in the face of protesters, further to this a Taser stun gun was wielded but not used on a student. The Union of UEA Students join groups such as Amnesty International in expressing concern over this heavy handed policing. Supporting the view of Amnesty that, “A Taser… should never be used as a crowd-control device.”. We would like to express complete solidarity with students at Warwick and throughout the country who continue to fight for free and fair education. As further accounts of the incident come out we hope it is resolved and any acts of police brutality are dealt with properly and thoroughly. As a Union we fully support all peaceful protests for Free Education and hope that the actions across the country on Wednesday and future demonstrations will lead both universities and the Government to join us in our belief that education is a right and not a privilege and as such should be free and open to all. In Solidarity, The Student Officer Committee, The Union of UEA Students.
