Stats SA has revealed that not only does the Cape Winelands have better health services and outcomes, but life was generally good. Its Eastern Cape counterpart was mainly characterised by poor health outcomes, unemployment and illiteracy. While the two districts were similar in size, population numbers and density, their living standards were worlds apart. The Winelands has 787 490 people, of whom 14 percent were unemployed. Of that, 19.4 percent were between the ages of 15 and 35; 4.4 percent of the population had no schooling.
