But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up. Daniel 3:17–18 ESV Standing before the ruthless king that had conquered their cities and taken them captive, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego listened to the decree. King Nebuchadnezzar had built a golden image ninety feet high and commanded everyone to bow down and worship it when the music played. All they had to do was bow down and this problem would go away. They could think of many ways to justify doing this as well. After all they were captives here. They should obey the laws of the land. God could have intervened in the first place and they would not even have to be here. Everyone else is doing it. When given the choice of bowing down to the golden idol or dying, they chose death. They stood on Duet 5:7, “You shall have no other gods before Me”. They told Nebuchadnezzar that God was able to deliver them, but even if He did not, they would not bow to his idol of gold. They were thrown into the burning furnace and God met them in the fire. They chose death, yet lived and with a powerful testimony. If they had compromised the word of God that they knew and understood by intentionally bowing down to the idol, they would have been just like everyone else, and God would not have, or had to, deliver them. If you want to see God show Himself mighty in your life, be different. Don’t go with the flow. Stand on His word and do not compromise to avoid the coming confrontation. God meets us in the furnace after we have took a stand on His word and shows that He is mighty to save.
