Status Update: December 1, 2013 24 Days Before Christmas... But the Christmas Spirit is nowhere to be found here in Haiyan devastated areas in Leyte (Ormoc, Tacloban and its neighboring towns). People here never thought of celebrating Christmas anymore. Primary concerns of the people here are, how they will survived everyday. As of this moment relief operations in ormoc is slowly going to a halt probably it will stop days from now. Since our government and the media falsely reported that there are already a surplus supply of relief goods here in leyte. But in reality there is none. People here now have a bleak future. For the last 3 weeks, they recieved only few relief goods, which they try to budget and stretch to survive for days or weeks to come, but now they very worried, that relief goods distribution will stop, since majority of the people here have no work since Haiyan struck. All of the classes now, are all in trouble from rich to poor, Businessmen to consumers, employers to employees. There are no factories and manufacturers that are operational right now. Coconut fields which are major source of income (where copras, tuba, and etc are taken), were destroyed. Rice fields cant be harvested anymore, and cant be planted for the incoming months since the irragation system were all devastated. Sugarcane fields now suffers the most, sugarcane planters now were already in big trouble, since sugarcane cant be harvested anymore for it has no more sugar content in it, and the big problem is that, the Sugar Refinery Facility in Kananga, Leyte is damage and cant operate this year. Fisheries sector are also in ruined, since fishing vessels, big or small, even fish ponds or fish cage were destroyed. Now, people here now suffers paranoia and panic. In ormoc, people start to steal or loot for food or goods from others during night time just to survive. We cant blame them to do bad things or loot, probably they are really desperate to let their family to survive. A law of self-preservation. Even, myself I feel that northern leyte, is left behind, left inruins. Gun shots are heard everywhere during night time. People or community here are on the watch every night to protect their property and their family from this desperate looters... What northern leyte needs right now, aside from relief goods distribution, is a catalyst fund that will help to revive the economy and source of living of the said places. Local farms, fishiries, factories, manufactorers, business establishments, and etc must be assisted to reestablish and to revive themselves and in return, jobs will be produced and created for the people. I hope that government, NGOs and civic organizations will act as early as possible. I hope everything will be done immediately and it must not be too late. There will be a possibility, that everything will be in chaos and turmoil, like what happen in tacloban, if the authorities will not act immediately. May God give us all the strength and patience in facing this calamity... Lion Wenceslao C.
