Stay-Put Cutlery & Bowl A REVOLUTIONARY WEANING CONCEPT INSPIRED - TopicsExpress

Stay-Put Cutlery & Bowl A REVOLUTIONARY WEANING CONCEPT INSPIRED BY CHILDREN! Stay-Put Cutlery was created to eradicate the age old problem of children throwing cutlery to the floor at mealtime. This unique cutlery set encourages independent feeding skills from as early as 9 months and should be introduced prior to the existence of any feeding skills. Step 1. Moisten suction pads and attach securely to a highchair tray or non porous table top. Ensure all suction pads and tray/table surfaces are free from grease or food residue. Wash by hand in hot soapy water and rinse before each use. Press bowl firmly to tray surface ensuring release tab is farthest away from the child. The cutlery suction pads should be positioned as close to the bowl as possible (see Image 1 below) so that the flexible coils reach the child’s mouth comfortably. The suction bowl should also be positioned as close to the child as possible. To enable maximum adhesion of bowl, lift outer edges of suction pad so that the underside of the pad exposes the vacuum recess, then press firmly to tray or table top (see Image 2 below). Hint: Do not squash suction pads as this will affect efficiency. To reactivate memory of suction pads on cutlery and suction pad of bowl, immerse in hot water for one minute then carefully remove and leave to stand on a flat surface to cool before use. Not recommended for dishwashers, steam sterilizers or microwave. Step 2. When the child is approximately 9 months old Stay-Put Cutlery should be introduced in the following manner. Place a small amount of soft food on the tip of the spoon and then place the spoon in the child’s hand. We recommend it is something the child likes and has eaten before. Hint: Some parents have indicated that they prefer to feed the child a main course first and then introduce the child to the cutlery at dessert time. It has been observed that when a child tries to take a spoon from your hand, this means the child is usually ready to try self feeding. Step 3. As the mouth is the first sensor of touch, the child will feel the spoon with its lips. The initial reaction of the child will be to pull on the spoon. The flexible coil will extend, then gradually and gently return the child’s hand back towards the bowl or plate once the child has eaten. This action is natural to a child’s reflexes. The flexible coils are of a specific length and tension to stimulate control and dexterity. It is essential to ensure the suction pads of the cutlery set are positioned as Image 1, so that the child can utilize the flexible coils to their full extent. Hint: Try this for yourself; attach the suction pad of the spoon to a non porous surface and pull gently, extending the flexible coil. Then release the tension and it will slowly recoil to the starting position. This recoiling action helps the child to discover the repetitive reflex action required to feed independently. Step 4. Place the spoon in the child’s hand and guide it to the bowl, then put a small amount of food onto the tip of the spoon and assist the child to put the spoon into their mouth. Repeat this a few times to encourage the child to master this new skill. Hint: Always encourage and praise your child as they develop their feeding techniques. SUMMARY: Mealtime should always be a happy time and it’s one that parents and children should always find enjoyable. However, it can on occasion be a time of tears and frustrations. To encourage a positive atmosphere at mealtime, introduce Stay-Put Cutlery when the child is approx. 9-12 months old. They will not only find it fun but simple to master. This unique cutlery set encourages control and enhances co-ordination so that self feeding techniques are acquired in a short period of time. As children experience the positive effects of self feeding their skills develop quicker making mealtimes a more relaxed and happier experience for all.
