Stay on main roads in Guatemala A member of the US Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) took a trip to Flores Peten on Sunday October 5th. Passing through border was the usual smooth, no hassle process. However on the road to Flores, he noticed the security forces were out in full force at check points. The police and military were all polite and courteous. They explained they were looking for contraband coming from the Benque Free Zone and they advised that drivers who have Belize license plates to stay on the main roads where the patrols are visible. They should stay from the back roads leading to Dolores, Poptun, and near the border villages such as Salpet, El Narenjo, El Tikalito, Grano de Oro, and Cruzadero etcetera. These back road villages are adjacent to the Caracol and Chiquibul area’s now in conflict, and are to be avoided at this time. The OSAC member stayed on the main roads returned that night without any problems.
