Staying hydrated during hot activities! This time of the year is usually hot in most places so it is important to know how to combat dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke! Most importantly, when it is hot, adequate planning should be considered so that you are not spending highly active times in direct sunlight. It is important to note that hydration is not something that occurs only during activities but the day or days before. When an outdoor activity is being planned, a small amount of sea salt in your drinking water a few days before the activity would be very beneficial in addition to the maintenance of water intake. There should not be consideration of any other liquid as hydration. Sugary drinks, colored drinks, soda and juice DO NOT serve the body in the same manner as water. Matter of a fact, water along with our food is the true way to rehydrate which would include minerals and nutrients that we lose with sweat. No matter how many times they say it in the commercials Gatorade/Powerade IS NOT a good hydration method. Gatorade/Powerade is artificial and is not managed as water which is the only substance that can serve to rehydrate with associated minerals and nutrients. Another critical evaluation is thirst. If you wait to drink water until you are thirsty, you have made a mistake. Thirst is an extreme sign of dehydration. Color of urine and frequency of urination are the best signs. Your urine should remain clear or light yellow and in hot temperatures, you should drink enough fluid to urinate at least every 2 hours. I do not suggest sunblocks or sunscreens because most of the ingredients are very poisonous and sometimes carcinogenic. Vitamin E, cocoa butter or shea butter are better for skin protection when purchased in their pure forms. A special note for those who are practicing Ramadan. It is imperative to concentrate on hydration prior to prayer in the morning and prior to eating your meal after sunset. A dehydrated body cannot digest, absorb or disseminate nutrients well. voices.yahoo/stay-hydrated-summer-heat-3589151.html?cat=5
