#SteadyPanda Song of the Week ► This is the last entry that will be written regarding the lyrics to the album STEADY. It has been a good experience for all of us to reflect back on where we were when we wrote these songs. Someone might hear these songs for the first time in twenty years. I wonder where we will be then? What will these songs mean then? Playing live is for the moment. Albums are forever. They are a dot on the line of a musical career. In the case of our band, it is five lifelines, coming together through thick and think, to collaborate on something that will last longer than them. Favorite Song is pretty much about making music and living life. I have no favorite song, I just love to play and to write. It helps me feel like I am doing something worthwhile with my life. This tune is kind of an ode to writing. Whether the inspiration is a woman, a painting, or just to swing a mood, the music always works well to capture it. It was nice to put this song to bed. It has many versions with different styles and chord structures. This one was kind of in honor of Jerry Garcia. The Dead are a mystical phenomenon. You can search and search and just hear terrible night after terrible night of mistakes and sluggishness. Then you might hear that same tape, from start to finish, and you might have a mystical revelation of pure musical beauty. The only thing that changed was you. Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right -RH Scarlet Begonias One cool thing about Jerry was that he didn’t really write lyrics. One of the most celebrated singers and songwriters yet the words were most often written by Robert Hunter. I always thought that was really hip, because I bet he could write lyrics, he just chose not to. The one guy from the Dead who everyone wanted to know what he had to say, and he kinda said nothing. He existed in music. It’s pretty classy. So the instrumental part of this tune, played by Aaron Lipp on the lap steel, is an ode to Jerry. The little bend, and into the solo, were all meant to be searching for that sound. You will never quite match it, but you can shine light on where it exists. This was the last tune we recorded for the album. As we packed up our stuff and left, we noticed that the American Beauty vinyl was sitting in the corner of the studio, almost propped up like it had taken a seat. This was not a place where you would find Dead memorabilia lying around. It was a coincidence. Someone had left it there. It had experienced the whole album recording. It felt like that just might be the spirit, the juju, that was with us while we recorded STEADY and BRIGHT DAYS. You know those times when you just know something special was happening? It was one of those times. - James Searl New album STEADY out now! ► iTunes: smarturl.it/cqafou ► Amazon: smarturl.it/nogu2m ► Google Play: smarturl.it/m8udz3 ► CD: smarturl.it/d0qgm2
